Read to unlock

Apps that lock Instagram until you read

Updated October 13, 2026

The short version: Instagram can remind you to stop, but it can’t make you read first. For that you need a read-to-unlock app (also called a reading app blocker), which keeps Instagram locked until you’ve read. On Android your main choices are FirstPage, Another Page and One More Page. On iPhone there are many more, and several of them work with paper books. The biggest difference between them is when you read: once a day, or every time you open the app.

Why Instagram’s own limits don’t do this

  • Instagram’s daily limit (Profile, Menu, Time management) is, in Instagram’s own words, a reminder. When it goes off, you tap past it.
  • Sleep mode, which used to be called Quiet mode, pauses notifications and reminds you to close the app, but for most people the app still opens.
  • Android’s app timers in Digital Wellbeing do close Instagram and grey out its icon. To get back in before midnight, you delete the timer, which takes a few seconds.
  • iPhone’s Screen Time limits have long been easy to ignore once reached unless you set a Screen Time passcode.

None of these ask anything of you before Instagram opens again. That matters, because limits do work when they hold. In a randomized experiment published in 2022, people given a tool to set their own limits cut their time on social apps and the browser by 22 minutes a day over 12 weeks, and most of them chose to make the limits binding.

The three kinds of read-to-unlock apps

  1. A daily goal. You read a set number of pages or minutes once, and your apps stay open for the rest of the day or the reading window. FirstPage works this way, and so does Marca on iPhone.
  2. A toll on every open. Each time you open Instagram, you read first: a page, a passage or a few minutes. The app then opens for a set time and locks again. Another Page, PageToll and several iPhone apps work this way.
  3. Scan a paper book. You photograph a page of a physical book and answer a question about it to earn minutes. Read to Unlock and Pagelock on iPhone work this way.

A daily goal suits people who want one proper reading session and then a normal phone. A toll suits people who open Instagram on reflex and want each reflex to cost a page. Scanning suits people who already read paper and want it to count.

On Android

FirstPage keeps the apps you pick locked until you hit a daily goal in pages or minutes, read in its own reader with your EPUB and PDF files or free classics. When you try to open a locked app, it shows how many pages are left and a button back to your book. You can split the day into reading windows, a morning goal and an evening goal, and there’s a short way out when you need it: 10 minutes, up to three times a day. It uses Usage access and an overlay, not Android’s Accessibility service. We make it, so weigh that.

Another Page shows a reading screen before a blocked app opens, then lets the app through for the time you chose. It has a library of more than 4,500 public-domain books in 12 languages. Importing your own EPUB is a Premium feature. It’s also on iPhone, which FirstPage isn’t yet.

One More Page (listed as Read to Scroll) locks apps on schedules until you meet a reading goal, with Standard Ebooks and Project Gutenberg books or your own EPUB. It’s new, launched in September 2026, and it uses Android’s Accessibility service.

On iPhone

iPhone has the most choice, because Apple lets apps lock other apps through Screen Time. Marca is the closest to a daily goal and its lock is free. Read to Unlock and Pagelock are the best known of the paper book apps. ReadUp, PageToll, Bookplate and BookLock are newer. Most have only a handful of ratings, so try the free version or trial before you pay for a year.

How to lock Instagram until you read with FirstPage

  1. Install FirstPage from Google Play.
  2. Pick Instagram, and any other app that eats your evenings.
  3. Set a goal you’ll keep on a bad day, like 10 pages. You can raise it later.
  4. Allow Usage access, Display over other apps, and the battery exception, so the lock keeps working in the background.
  5. Add a book: one you’re already reading, or a classic from the library.
  6. If you open instagram.com in a browser when the app is locked, lock the browser too.

Questions

Can Instagram lock itself until I read?
No. Instagram's daily limit is a reminder, not a block, according to Instagram's own help center. Sleep mode, the newer name for Quiet mode, pauses notifications but you can still use the app. Only parents supervising a Teen Account can block Instagram when a limit is reached.
Is there an Android app that locks Instagram until you read?
Yes. FirstPage keeps Instagram locked until you reach a daily reading goal. Another Page and One More Page are also on Google Play, and PageToll has an early Android version. Most read-to-unlock apps are iPhone only.
Do I have to read in the app, or do paper books count?
It depends on the app. FirstPage, Another Page and PageToll count reading inside the app. On iPhone, Read to Unlock and Pagelock ask you to scan a page of a paper book with the camera and answer a question.
Can I still open Instagram in my browser?
These apps lock apps, not websites. If you tend to open instagram.com when the app is locked, lock your browser too, or log out of Instagram in it.
Do app limits work at all?
Yes, on average. In a 2022 randomized experiment published in the American Economic Review, giving people a tool to set screen time limits cut their time on social apps and the browser by 22 minutes a day, about 16 percent, over 12 weeks.
